Taste Something New! Food Expansion & Exploration

Fear of the unknown can show up in various areas in your life. For some, food is one of those areas where they don’t venture outside the realm of their comfort. Exploring and experimenting with new foods can be exciting! Inhale and exhale the aromas as you are cooking new foods or a new cuisine. Allow yourself to be enveloped by the process. The adventure of trying new foods and flavors with those you love has the ability to help facilitate fond memories that you’ll have for a lifetime.

Explore Japanese cuisine with this teriyaki bowl recipe. It has some ingredients you may be familiar with and some you may not - either way, the flavor is so delicious!

 ingredients

  • 1 lb of ground protein (beef, chicken or turkey)

  • 2 cups of Jasmine rice

  • Fresh or frozen broccoli

  • 1 teaspoon of fresh ginger

  • 1 ½ cups of low sodium soy sauce

  • ½ cup of brown sugar

  • 1 tablespoon of cornstarch (add to warm water to make a slurry)

  • 1 lime

  • Sesame seeds

  • Sriracha

 recipe

If you have a rice cooker or instapot, prepare rice using the appliance. If not, follow the instructions that should be on the rice package. Boil or steam your broccoli to your liking in a small pot - I suggest firm rather than soft, especially if you want to add to the skillet with ground protein.

Brown the thawed ground protein over medium-high heat and season with salt and pepper.  Remove from the skillet and set aside. DO NOT DISCARD THE RENDERED FAT.

Add soy sauce, ginger, garlic and diced onion. Sauté until the onion is translucent, next add the brown sugar stirring to fully incorporate.  Follow with the slurry to thicken the sauce and turn the heat down to low.

Add the browned ground protein back to the skillet and gently stir in making sure to cover the protein in the sauce.  Simmer for 5 minutes.  Now you’re ready to plate and garnish.  Build your teriyaki bowl starting with the jasmine rice, then cooked protein and broccoli.  Garnish with sesame seeds, a lime wedge and sriracha if you like a little spice in your life.
