Legacy isn’t What You Leave. It’s What You Live.

by Deneen L. Garrett

Welcome to Dreaming After 50 — a monthly column for the woman who knows she is just getting started.

What if the most powerful thing you could do right now is stop waiting?

Not later. Not once the timing is right, or the money is ready, or someone finally sees what you bring to the table.

Right now.

Because here is the truth nobody tells you until you’re standing in it: legacy isn’t built in the eulogy. It’s built in the everyday decision to live fully, on purpose, without permission.

Toni Morrison didn’t ask anyone if she was allowed to tell Black women’s stories. She told them. Dr. Thema Bryant, psychologist and past president of the American Psychological Association, teaches that liberation begins the moment you stop performing for an audience that was never meant to determine your worth. That moment — when you finally release the need for external validation — is not the end of something. It is the beginning of everything.

So ask yourself: what are you still waiting for permission to begin? A business? A creative project? A harder conversation? A softer life? The permission you’ve been waiting for is not coming from the outside. It was yours all along.

Legacy is a Living Practice

Legacy is not what you leave behind when you’re gone. It is what you activate while you’re here. Every time you show up as the fullest version of yourself — in your work, your relationships, your community — you are building it. Every time you speak your truth without shrinking, you are writing it. Every time you pour into another woman and say, “you can do this,” you are extending it.

As Valerie Burton, bestselling author and founder of the Coaching and Positive Psychology Institute, reminds us: a meaningful life is not an accident. It is a decision made over and over again, in small moments and large ones, to live in alignment with what matters most to you. That decision is yours to make. Today.

Three Ways to Live Your Legacy Now

Stop minimizing your wins.

Every achievement you downplay is a piece of your legacy you’re quietly erasing. Own it. Name it. Celebrate it.

Build in community.

The Dream Lifestyle™ Collective — a community for Black women 50+ — exists because legacy multiplies when women build together. Find your circle. Invest there.

Give yourself permission today.

Not when you’re ready. Not when it makes sense to everyone else. Today. Because the life you’ve been designing in your head is waiting for you to say yes.

You don’t need anyone’s approval to live boldly. You don’t need perfect conditions to begin. You need a decision. Legacy isn’t what you leave. It’s what you live — starting right now.
