Flowing from the Heart

“Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.” Proverbs 4:23

What we carry in our hearts will eventually be reflected in our words and actions. This is why we are encouraged to guard our hearts, not in a way that builds a wall and becomes hard, but in a manner that what flows from it is like a well of fresh spring water that aids in the uplifting of others.

As a child, I remember visiting my grandmother in Grapeland, Texas, a small country town where we had to draw water from the well in her backyard to bathe and to use for cooking. I remember a few things about the well. I recall the depth of the well, the coldness of the water, and a board covering the top of the well to help keep particles from the outside entering the water. The entry to the well needed to be protected; anything entering the well other than water would be transferred to others through the water, so guarding it was important.

The purpose of the well was to supply fresh water for use, and as we drew water, we knew what we were getting because of what was flowing in the well.

What you feed your spirit and mind is what will eventually flow from you. You must be intentional about guarding your spirit and your heart. Even during tumultuous times, be careful what you allow to enter in.

Whatever things are lovely, whatsoever things are pure, think on those things. Reflect on the blessings you have been given and use those memories as fuel for your now and future.

Protect your heart and peace because what flows from your heart can be contagious. I encourage you to have an attitude of gratitude regardless of what is going on around you. Not just for Thanksgiving, but make it a lifestyle. Gratitude flowing from your heart will shift you mentally, emotionally, and spiritually.
