Valentine’s Day and Beyond: 5 Creative Ideas for Handwritten Notes

As a child, February 14 was like a bonus holiday between Christmas and Easter. It was a day for special treats and exchanging cards with sayings like “Roses are red, violets are blue, I love pizza, but not as much as you.” Silly as they were, those valentines remind me of the power of a personal note.

With the rise of instant messaging, FaceTime, and other digital communications, the practice of writing letters has declined. Nonetheless, former Forbes councils member Karen Casey says this simple act “can change the course of someone’s day, week, or even life.”

Granted, texting is faster and more convenient, but it does not carry the same emotional weight. According to an article from The Mirage, “…handwritten messages carry a sense of sincerity and effort that digital messages often lack. The act of taking the time to write a note symbolizes the care and attention the sender has for the receiver, making the message more impactful.”

As Valentine’s Day approaches, why not seize the opportunity to tell your people how much you love them with a handwritten message? Here are some ideas to get you started.

the sticky note

Perhaps you think, “I’m not good with words!” That’s okay. Keep it short and sweet with a couple of sticky notes and have fun with where you place them, whether on a mirror, desk, water bottle, or steering wheel.

the homemade note

If you’re feeling crafty, consider designing your own card. You might be surprised how much raw material you have at your fingertips. With some paper, sharpies, scissors, and Pinterest, the possibilities are endless.

the hand-lettering note

Want to add a little flair? Play around with hand-lettering. Search for tutorials on YouTube or check out Cute Hand Lettering by Cindy Guentert-Baldo. Regardless of how you pick it up, hand-lettering is a great way to personalize your messages.

the origami note

Here is a note that is sure to appeal to the kids in your life. Again, Pinterest is your friend. Simply type in “beginner origami” and pick your pattern. The best part? All you need is paper. Just be sure to write your message inside before folding it up!

the postcard note

An old-fashioned postcard is a good option if you have loved ones living far away and you’re pressed for time. Not only are they inexpensive, but they also come in hundreds of different designs and retain the personal touch of a handwritten note.

don’t stop there!

While Valentine’s Day provides a helpful nudge, notes of appreciation require no special occasion. Dare to be generous with the written expression of your love throughout 2024. You never know how your words will impact someone’s life.
