This Is Not Your Mother’s Way to Wellness. You Have a Whole New Vibe.

by Charlene A. Berry

Your mother’s wellness plan wasn’t a clever hack or tracked in a journal or an app. It was Vicks Vapor Rub, a pot of greens, and a prayer whispered before sunrise. It was showing up. It was pushing through. It was doing what needed to be done, whether there was energy for it or not.

Like so many women of her generation, our mothers carried family, faith, work, and worry on their backs and somehow made it all look effortless. They worked when they were tired. They cared for others when they themselves needed caring. They called headaches “just stress,” exhaustion “just life,” and sacrifice “what mothers do.”

Many of us watched our mothers care for everyone else, and rarely — if ever — themselves. Our mothers weren’t wellness influencers. They were survival experts living through hardship, discrimination, economic uncertainty, and expectations that left little room for rest. Their strength wasn’t a personality trait, it was a necessity. They did their best with what they had.

And because they did, you have something they didn’t: a choice.

Today, wellness looks different. This shift is not a sign that you’re weaker than they were in some areas of their being. It’s a sign that you’re finally giving yourself permission to heal differently and your definition of wellness takes on a whole new vibe.

From Silent to Spoken

Your mother’s generation often believed that private pain stayed private. If something hurts, you prayed about it. If something broke your heart, you kept moving. If something overwhelmed you, you handled it quietly. But for you, your vibe is different.

  • You pray and go to therapy.

  • You journal.

  • You talk to trusted friends.

  • You learn the language of anxiety, burnout, trauma, and healing.

  • Where your mother saw privacy as protection, you on the other hand discovered that vulnerability can be healing.

As women, we have flipped the script on how we interpret wellness. You can choose to say no to anything that doesn’t align with your purpose or your peace. And when something does shake you, you’re far more comfortable speaking it out loud — with friends, family, or a healthcare provider — a dramatic cultural shift from the generations before you. You’re learning that speaking up is not weakness. It’s awareness + wellness.

Psychologist Dr. Thema Bryant, past president of the American Psychological Association reminds us that, “healing begins when we tell the truth about what hurts. While our mothers taught us resilience — wellness is teaching us recovery.” (Learn more about Dr. Bryant's work at https://drthema.com/)

From Last to List

Have you ever recalled a time when you watched your mother eat last? Serving everyone else first. Making sure every plate was full before thinking about her own. Often, she probably stood at the counter eating what was left while everyone else sat down. The image stays with you. The cold plate. The rushed meal. The woman who made sure everybody else was nourished while she ran on empty.

The new vibe says something radical:

My needs matter, too.

Self-care is not selfish.

Rest is not laziness.

Nourishment is not something I have to earn.

This new vibe you’re gleaning from is teaching you to sit down with the fork. Eat the warm meal. Drink the water. And for once, take yourself more seriously. Not because you’re putting yourself above everyone else. But because you finally understand you’re on the care list too.

From Grind to Grounding

For those women before us, being tired was proof that you were doing enough. Sleep was negotiable. Downtime was optional. Productivity was identity. But exhaustion has never been a sustainable wellness strategy. Today, rest is no longer viewed as something you earn after burnout. It’s becoming a wellness practice all its own.

We’re taking walks.

Blocking time on our calendars for personal care.

Taking mental health days.

Letting the laundry wait.

And perhaps, most importantly, you’re refusing to measure your value by your exhaustion and finally learning the power of your inherent worth.

You matter because you exist! Not because you’re tired. Not because you’re productive. Just because you’re here — filling a viable space.

From Alone to Asking

Some of the strongest women you know never asked for help. They were the help. The ride. The babysitter. The caretaker. The problem-solver. The emergency contact. Many of them carrying what seems like an entire community on their shoulders. But carrying everything alone comes at a cost. The new vibe embraces support.

Now you call the doctor.

You ask questions.

You lean on family.

You accept help when it is offered.

You set boundaries when it is needed.

You stop confusing burnout with purpose. Because wellness is not about proving how much you can carry. It’s about knowing what you’re not meant to carry alone.

The Blessing

Your new vibe isn’t betrayal. It’s evolution. We honor our mother’s strength. They survived so we could heal. They endured so we could evolve to choose differently.

Today, we’re doing our best with what we know. Their version of wellness kept them alive. While our rendition of it is helping us revive. Maybe that’s the blessing hidden inside generational healing.

The women before us planted seeds they may never have had the chance to enjoy. Their sacrifices created space for our continued existence. Their resilience created room for our restoration. Their prayers created our possibilities. They held the line so we could cross it. They gave us their strength so we could stand stronger longer. And perhaps that’s why wellness has become one of the most powerful movements of our time. More women are deciding that surviving is no longer an option. It is your desire to BE WELL.

So no, this is not your mother’s plan to wellness. And I think she would be proud of that. This new vibe of yours isn’t rebellion. It’s inheritance. It’s the therapy appointment she never felt safe enough to make. It’s the boundary she never had permission to set. It’s the nap she never had time to take. It’s the healing that she hoped would reach you one day. And it’s the answer to prayers she prayed long before you understood what real self-care looks and feels like.

This week, think about one “mama rule” you’re ready to retire. Then choose one new wellness vibe practice you’re ready to claim. Say it out loud. Your entire nervous system is listening.

You can still honor your mother and choose different. And honey? Right now, this whole new vibe is going to look good on you!
