Rooted, Yet Still Growing: The Courage to Keep Becoming
by Queen Esther Phillips
There is something beautiful about a tree with deep roots. It has endured seasons of wind, rain, heat, and drought, yet it remains grounded. Its roots provide stability while its branches continue reaching upward.
Perhaps that is a picture of what it means to grow older and wiser.
I have learned that being rooted does not mean we have stopped growing. In fact, the deeper our roots, the more prepared we can be to reach, stretch, and be productive.
Like me, I believe many women 40+, have learned something outside the classroom. We have learned through relationships, disappointments, transitions, successes, failures, motherhood, careers, faith, loss, and starting over. We possess wisdom that no one can acquire or download instantly. But we should not let wisdom become a monument to what we have already learned. Wisdom should shape how we continue to live, grow, and become.
Wisdom keeps us grounded. Growth keeps us moving.
Because of extensive experience, we may feel that there is little left for us to learn. Yet lifelong learning requires humility — the willingness to remain curious, teachable, and open to new perspectives. The world continues to change, and remaining relevant does not require abandoning who we are. It requires being willing to discover what this season requires of us.
Our purpose can also expand.
The purpose we embraced in one season may look different in another. What once required our full attention may now be something we can release. What we once lacked the confidence to pursue may now call us forward. Purpose is not always about doing more; sometimes it is about recognizing what matters now and stewarding it well.
And stewardship is not simply about money or possessions. We steward our time, wisdom, relationships, gifts, influence, health, opportunities, and even the lessons we have learned. What has life taught us that can now become nourishment for someone else?
That question matters because our growth is rarely just for us.
The wisdom gained through hard seasons can become encouragement. The skills developed through years of work can become mentorship. The mistakes we survived can become insights. The doors that opened for us can become opportunities to hold the door open for someone else.
This is why being rooted matters.
Roots allow a tree to withstand changing conditions without losing its foundation. Likewise, when truth, values, faith, and wisdom from experience root us, we can accept change without allowing it to define us.
We can learn something new without becoming someone new.
We can honor who we have been while making room for who we are becoming.
Perhaps the invitation in this season is not to prove that we have arrived, but to remain willing to grow.
We are still growing in grace with the courage to keep growing.
This may be one of the most beautiful things about being rooted: we can stand firmly grounded while continuing to reach toward everything God has placed ahead of us.
