Keeping the Family Legacy Strong While Building Your Own

Andrea Ward

Andrea Ward is a true multi-dimensional entrepreneur, encompassing roles as a filmmaker, writer, domestic violence activist (and survivor), and celebrity fashion stylist. She even carries the legacy as the great-niece of the iconic Billie Holiday. Her unwavering passion has throw her into the spotlight, with impressive feats such as being a featured designer for prestigious events like Mercedes Benz Fashion Week, NYFW, LAFW, and Milan Fashion Week. Her work has graced the pages of renowned publications including Essence Magazine, Elements Magazine, Style Cruz Magazine, USA Weekly, LA Fashion Weekly, and more. From billboards in Madison Square to the online stage of UN Women Fashion Week, her influence knows no bounds.

You wear many hats as a filmmaker, writer, activist, celebrity fashion stylist, and more. How do you manage to excel in such diverse fields, and what drives your passion for each of these roles?

There is no right answer for this but to do the best I can by juggling the many skills and talents I have. It is really about time management and having an organized schedule.

As an activist against domestic violence and a survivor yourself, could you share the story of how you found the strength to channel your experiences into advocacy and awareness?

As a survivor of domestic violence and an activist, I found my strength and voice after becoming a mother. My life had more meaning and purpose far beyond myself. I became a symbol of hope for others dealing with domestic violence, and I use my platforms to spread awareness.

Billie's legacy inspired me with the strength and resilience needed to never give up on my dreams and purpose in making a difference in the world. Billie had to fight a battle of being recognized not only as a woman in the entertainment industry, but also as a Black woman during a period when people of colored were not welcomed in many spaces — even if they were talented, most were treated almost less than human. It taught me no matter what, even when the world may not be fair or kind, you must have thick skin to deal with it and fight back for what you want in life.

Being a featured designer for events like Mercedes Benz Fashion Week and NYFW is a remarkable accomplishment. Can you walk us through the process of bringing your designs to these prestigious runways?

The process of bringing designs to a prestigious runway show is by first sketching or drawing out your designs, shop for color and or patterns along with proper materials, research the latest trends, plan ahead of season, cut or create your patterns, measurements are a-must have, submit yourself to fashion weeks productions, be prepared to have your own hair makeup crew, model cast, select music and show, make sure to obtain list of buyers that will be present, make as many appearances as possible and be sure to think outside the box for the show.

Your short film Reborn Redemption has garnered numerous awards. Could you discuss the inspiration behind the film and the challenges you faced while bringing this action-packed superhero story to life?

Reborn Redemption is a short that inspired me to test my skills and abilities to create art with little to no funding. Reborn Redemption is a story of finding redemption with a young woman who was also a victim of domestic violence, she found the strength within herself became the hero she never had.

In your journey, you've been recognized with numerous nominations and wins. What advice would you give to aspiring filmmakers and creatives aiming to achieve recognition and success in their fields?

Never give up on your dreams, network and make friends with other filmmakers, surround yourself with successful people and always create/ learn as much as you can, don't be afraid to put yourself out there.
